In order to understand what role interrogative pronouns and adverbs play in a sentence we need to know first how this one is formed. An interrogative sentence is written between two question marks: opening (¿) and closing (?). These sentences are classified in two types:
–Oraciones interrogativas totales. When the answer can be ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
¿Te gusta ir al cine? Do you like going to the cinema?
-Sí
–Oraciones interrogativas parciales. It can be replied with any answer (not only affirmative or negative one) and the question is formed by an interrogative pronoun. It is important to remember that these particles always have accent. This is one way to difference them from the indirect interrogative sentence (apart from the context).
¿Qué haces hoy? What are you doing today?
-Voy a la piscina I’m going to the swinming pool
Types of interrogative pronouns and adverbs, each one marked by (P) or (A):
(P) Qué – What
(A) Dónde – Where
(A) Por qué – Why
(P) Quién – Who
(A) Cuándo – When
(A) Cómo – How
(P) Cuál – Which
(A/P) – Cuánto – How much/How many
In addition to this, most of interrogative pronouns can be used together with a preposition. The preposition always goes before the pronouns. Example: ¿Para quién trabajas? Who do you work for?

Qué/Cuál
–Cuál refers to a choice made from different options and is variable (cual/ cuales).
¿ Cuál es tu serie favorita? What is your favourite serie?
-When the pronouns comes before the noun, the element used is qué (however in South America is more common to used cuál).
¿ Qué tipo de comida prefieres? What type of food do you prefer?
¿ Cuáles tipos de comida prefieres? What type of food do you prefer?
