Regular verbs. Verbs ending -ar, -er, and -ir

In this section, you can learn about most common regular verbs in Spanish and how they are formed.

In order to identify the regular verbs we look at the main part of the word, which is the root of the verb ‘la raíz del verbo‘; when it does not change, then it means that is a regular verb, i.e. comprar (to buy) – Yo compro / Tú compras. Although most verbs are regular ones, there is also a long list of irregular verbs that basically we will have to learn by memory. Specially the common verbs that we use in our everyday conversation, if you previously checked the part *To start with, you know already two important verbs from this list: ser/ estar (to be).

There are three groups of conjugation: 1st) ending -ar 2nd) ending -er and 3rd) ending -ir

Depending on the type of conjugation, the verb will have the following ending:

-ar-er-ir
-o-o-o
-as-es-es
-a-e-e
-amos-emos-imos
-ais-eis-is
-an-en-en

You can see below an example of conjugated verb for each group in Present simple and Preterito (past simple).
